Behind the Poetry
This poem was inspired by a night of church fellowship with my sisters in Christ.
After a time of heartfelt, Biblical teaching, Kim, our speaker that night, invited our women’s group to sing “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. She had printed out the lyrics beforehand and passed them around to each table. We weren’t sure how this mini worship session would go without instruments (or backing tracks), and to my slight embarrassment, I wasn’t too familiar with this particular hymn. However, God must’ve place it upon Kim’s heart to worship that night, so we did.
As we were singing the main chorus, harmonies started flowing effortlessly! It was as if we were all secretly hiding our singing abilities, and to our surprise we sounded great. Female voices in higher ranges and lower ranges blended together beautifully to glorify the God of our Salvation. I could almost picture what it would be like to listen to a choir of angels sing in Heaven. God’s presence was very present.
The Holy Spirit prompted those who were able to stand up as we sang the entirety of the song. Some women lifted their hands in soulful worship. Our youngest member that night, a baby girl sitting on her mother’s lap, looked around and listened with wide, bright eyes as her mother sang sweetly in tune.
I would’ve kept my eyes closed to soak in more of the Lord’s presence, but I had to keep one eye on the lyrics! Perhaps He wanted me to have a certain level of awareness to be able to write this poem and recall this memory. It brings joy to my heart when I ponder on these precious moments of faith and reverence.
I pray “A Song Sung By Daughters” blesses you and inspires you to write about your experiences. I encourage you to seek faithful fellowship with women you can journey with and trust. I’ve found that sometimes our faith grows when we take the spontaneous opportunity to worship alongside others.
A Song Sung By Daughters
The Spirit glorified the Son,
The Father watched from His throne,
The King of Kings inclined His ear
To a hymn being sung.
The song was coming from a church,
A group of women gathered there,
They lifted their voices,
They lifted their hands,
Shifting the unseen atmosphere.
And the Father smiled,
He outstretched His arm,
He gathered His angels,
His warriors to disarm
Every enemy that had been sent
To destroy all their hopes and dreams.
A song sung by daughters,
In soft harmonies,
Had revealed His heavenly mercies,
The Lord’s love was working
To feed His hungry sheep.
Blessings!
